Frequently asked questions

Are there in-app purchases, subscriptions or ads?

No. GM Screen has no in-app purchases, subscriptions, ads or accounts. Every feature is included.

Which devices does it run on? Do I need an iPhone Duo?

GM Screen runs on iPhone and iPad with iOS or iPadOS 17 or later. You don't need an iPhone Duo: the initiative tracker, dice, scenes, campaigns and Player Display work on every iPhone and iPad.

Only on iPhone Duo: in Table Mode, the outer display faces the players and shows their view, and closing the phone saves your campaigns and pauses the table camera.

How do I show the players' view on a second device?
  1. Install GM Screen on both devices and keep them on the same Wi-Fi, or turn on Bluetooth.
  2. On the GM's device, open the Players menu (on iPhone it may be under More) and choose Start Player Display.
  3. On the second device, go to Campaign > Campaigns and tap Use This Device as a Player Display.
  4. Allow Local Network access on both devices when asked.

The players see the scene, the initiative order, public health and shared rolls. Hidden combatants, stat blocks, notes, secret conditions and secret rolls never leave the GM's device.

The player device can't find my table.
Who can see my table while I host?

Anyone nearby running GM Screen can join and watch the players' view. The Players menu lists the connected viewers, and Stop Hosting disconnects everyone.

Where is Table Mode?

Table Mode needs a wide screen: an iPad, an opened iPhone Duo, or a large iPhone turned sideways. Open it from the Players menu while an encounter is shown.

Why does Table Mode ask for the camera?

Table Mode shows your dice tray on screen so you can read and record physical dice, and can freeze a still of the tray. The video is never recorded, saved or sent anywhere. Pick the front or back camera under Camera Options. If you'd rather not allow the camera, use Player Display on a second device instead.

On iPhone Duo, the players' screen disappeared.

iPhone Duo shows the players' view on the outer display only while GM Screen is full screen on the inner display and Table Mode's camera is running. It goes away if you leave the app, use Split View, or a phone call or the system interrupts the camera, and comes back when you return. You can also tap Use a Second Device to show the players' view on another iPhone or iPad.

Which dice notation is supported?

Examples: 2d6+3, 1d20 adv, 1d20 dis, 4d6kh3 (keep highest 3), kl, dh, dl, d100 or d%, and negative terms such as 1d8-1d4. Each roll can be shared with the players or kept secret. For physical dice, use Table Dice: tap the faces you rolled, add a modifier and apply the total.

How do I back up or move a campaign?

Go to Campaign > Campaigns, choose Save to Files or Prepare Export then Share Export. You get one .json file with the campaign's images inside. On the other device, use Import Campaign; it arrives as a copy.

Where is my data stored, and how do I delete it?

Only on your device, in GM Screen's own storage (and in your device backups). Delete a campaign under Campaign > Campaigns, or delete the app to remove everything. GM Screen collects no data; see the privacy policy.

Does GM Screen include rules or monsters from published games?

No. GM Screen works with any system and ships no rules text from published games. The starter campaign and its foes are original. Add your own characters and creatures in Party & Bestiary.
